Living in Staten Island, NY

Staten Island (NYS, Richmond County) is one of the five boroughs of New York City, along with Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. It is located in the southwest part of the city, separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull, and from the rest of New York City by New York Bay. With an approximate population of 500,000, Staten Island is the least populated of the five boroughs but is the third largest in area at 59 sq mi (153 km²).

Staten Island is the greenest and most suburban of the five boroughs. The North Shore, especially the neighborhoods of St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton, and Stapleton, are the most urban parts of the island where one can find the officially designated St. George Historic District and the St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, which feature large Victorian homes. RUMC sits in the North Shore. The South Shore has more suburban-style residential neighborhoods and is home to the two and one-half mile long F.D.R. Boardwalk, the fourth longest in the world.

The borough is multicultural and diverse, with a wide variety of world cuisines and entertainment.  The Staten lsland Mall offers varied and stylish shopping along with other major department stores. Major supermarkets are usually around the corner. Traders’ Joes a specialty grocery store has recently opened here. You can find fresh produce at reasonable prices at several farmers markets in the island.

Staten Island is accessible to Brooklyn via the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and to New Jersey via the Outerbridge Crossing, Goethals Bridge, and Bayonne Bridge. It has Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus service and an MTA rapid transit line, the Staten Island Railway, which runs from the ferry terminal at St. George, in the north to Tottenville, in the southern tip. Staten Island is the only one of the five boroughs of New York City that does not have a subway (below-ground rapid transit). The free Staten Island Ferryconnects the borough to Manhattan and is a popular tourist attraction, providing views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and lower Manhattan and easy access to top level theater and arts.
