Emergency Services and Inpatient Psychiatric Programs in Staten Island, NY

Any medical emergency is frightening. A psychiatric crisis, however, can seem uniquely threatening to a person and loved ones going through one. Richmond University Medical Center is here to help patients in Staten Island, New York, navigate urgent mental health situations. Our psychiatric emergency services and inpatient programs are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide relief for individuals in need.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP)

People experiencing a mental health crisis can find help at the Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation Program (CPEP). The only program of its kind in Staten Island, it takes a multidisciplinary approach to emergency care. Our full range of services include:

  • 24-hour crisis hotline
  • Comprehensive evaluations by coordinating psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers
  • Crisis intervention in a fully equipped emergency room setting
  • Extended observations up to 72 hours, if necessary
  • Alcohol, substance abuse, and addiction counseling

We also refer patients to appropriate community clinics within five days of their CPEP visit. Our aim is not only to address urgent issues and stabilize people in crisis, but also to transition them into long-term care with the goal of full recovery.

Mobile Crisis Outreach Service

When emergencies occur, patients need to be met where they are. This is why Richmond University Medical Center offers our mobile crisis outreach service, allowing us to respond whenever necessary.

The mobile crisis outreach service is a multidisciplinary team that responds to non-emergent crises within the Staten Island community. They visit individuals at home, work, or wherever they need urgent mental healthcare. They also offer interim counseling for patients recently discharged from the CPEP or our inpatient unit, ensuring continuity of care.

Individuals, family members, and professionals may call the mobile crisis outreach service to make a referral. All referrals are seen within 24 to 48 hours.

Inpatient Psychiatric Programs

When mental health emergencies require direct attention and monitoring, we also offer comfortable and secure inpatient accommodations. Our inpatient center features 30 adult beds and a separate 10-bed unit for children and adolescents. Patients have access to a full range of treatments and recovery services, including:

  • Extended observation
  • Individual and group therapy sessions
  • Patient and family education
  • Medication management
  • Rehabilitative activities
  • Neuromodulation treatment, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which can provide effective relief for severe or treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions

Services for Adults

The adult psychiatric inpatient unit treats patients 18 years of age and older. All patients receive a comprehensive evaluation upon entering the inpatient unit, which enables us to develop a personalized treatment plan to address their individual needs. Programs are focused on intensive short-term treatment, with the aim of preparing patients for release and a successful transition into adult outpatient services.

Services for Children and Adolescents

The child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit treats patients between three and 18 years of age. Like the adult program, it begins with a comprehensive assessment to develop a personalized treatment plan. Family participation is emphasized, empowering parents and loved ones to get involved with their child’s mental well-being. We also provide a school program, which is staffed by certified teachers who work closely with the patient’s school district for curriculum continuity.
