Volunteer Opportunities

Overview

We want you to be part of our RUMC Family! If you’re looking to make a difference in your community, be part of a team that is protecting the health of your neighbors and be part of an institution that has been part of the fabric of Staten Island for nearly 120 years, we have a place for you!

Getting Started

Becoming a volunteer at Richmond University Medical Center is simple:

  1. Review the available volunteer opportunities listed and apply for the volunteer opportunity that best interests you by using the form below. You can either fill out the form or attach your resume.
  2. Once we receive your information, if you are a potential match, you will be contacted to schedule a virtual interview so that our team can learn more about you.
  3. If you are accepted, you will be contacted by email and provided with next steps to begin the official on-boarding process. (Note: the on-boarding process can take up to three weeks so the sooner you begin the process the better.)
  4. Once you have completed the on-boarding process, we will work with you to schedule your start date, review materials/responsibilities before you begin, and answer any questions you may have.

Important: A urine drug screening (through our Employee Health Department), a complete physical (through your private healthcare provider) and a criminal background check are required as part of the on-boarding process. Failure or refusal to complete any of these requirements will eliminate your consideration as a volunteer.

For more information, please call 718-818-2309 or send an email to cgarber@rumcsi.org.

The minimum time commitment is 4 hours a week, unless otherwise specified. Volunteers are not permitted to serve over 37.5 hours a week.

What is the application process?

To begin the process, you will fill out your information on www.rumcsi.org/volunteeropportunities and receive an email with further instructions. The process includes filling out clearance paperwork that consists of an application form, a consent form, a confidentiality statement form, medical information form (vaccination history) and a parental consent form if under age 18.  NO APPLICATION CAN BE PROCESSED WITHOUT THE MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM. Please note that all questions on the clearance paperwork must be answered or else the paperwork will be denied from the system.

How long does it take to be processed once the application is completed?

On average it takes about 3 weeks to be processed and ready for assignment.

Can you guarantee volunteer experience in a particular department or area of the hospital?

No, the volunteer opportunities vary and are limited to the ones open when the volunteer is cleared.

Are there volunteer opportunities in the summer?

Yes, we accept students for summer placements. Many students volunteer from June through August. Please note the application process takes approximately 2-3 weeks, so please plan accordingly.

If I volunteer during the summer, may I return at vacation time or next summer?

Yes, you can return to continue to volunteer anytime you want, however, there is no guarantee of going back to the same position. A TB and drug test needs to be repeated annually.

What if I need specific volunteer hours, for example in physical therapy?

We try to work with volunteers that need specific hours but there is no guarantee space will be available.

Can I shadow through the volunteer program?

No, shadowing is arranged through the Hospital’s Human Resources Department by calling 718-818-2441.

Does volunteering at the hospital mean I will be able to get a job there?

Unfortunately, there are no guarantees of employment when volunteering.
