If you are experiencing intermittent symptoms of a heart problem, a Holter monitor test and telemetry exam may help you find the answer. Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York, offers a comprehensive suite of cardiology tests to ensure an accurate diagnosis of heart conditions and illnesses. Using Holter monitor tests, we can evaluate, diagnose, and treat your condition and put you on the path to better health.

What Are Holter Monitors?

A Holter monitor is a small, mobile version of an electrocardiogram (EKG) and designed to collect and record data on a person’s heart rate continuously. It’s a valuable tool for monitoring one’s heart rate over time and is used by Richmond University Medical Center to detect abnormalities. The Holter monitor can help us diagnose a variety of conditions, such as:

  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Electrolyte abnormalities
  • High blood pressure
  • Impaired blood flow
  • Myocarditis and pericarditis (inflammation)
  • Recent heart attacks

What Is Cardiac Telemetry?

Cardiac telemetry devices are similar to Holter monitors, though there are some key differences. Cardiac telemetry devices are prescribed for up to 30 days and are used for conditions with only sporadic or occasional symptoms. And because they’re used for longer periods, telemetry devices are often lighter in design than Holter monitors.

What to Expect

Unless your physician tells you otherwise, you should bathe well before your appointment. Depending on the type of monitor used, you may not be able to get wet once the procedure begins. A Holter monitor or telemetry procedure follows a few simple steps, including:

  • A medical technician will place sticky patches called electrodes on designated spots on your chest. Your chest may be shaved to allow the electrodes to stick.
  • The electrodes will then be attached to a light recording device. You will be instructed on how to properly wear and care for the device.
  • You will be asked to keep a diary of all your activities and all symptoms experienced while wearing the device.

You may wear the device for anywhere between two to 30 days, depending on the type of test you receive. You’ll be able to follow your normal daily activities while wearing the device, though you may have to avoid water.

When Testing Is Recommended

At Richmond University Medical Center, we use Holter monitors and telemetry devices to measure heart rate and detect conditions with sporadic symptoms. You may be asked to wear a device if you experience any of the following:

  • Unexplained fainting
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Occasional chest pains
  • Shortness of breath

If you have diabetes, a family history of heart problems, existing heart conditions, smoking or alcohol habits, stress, or high cholesterol, you might be more at risk of heart problems. Talk to your physician about whether a Holter monitor or telemetry test is right for you.
