Local Endocrinology Specialists

Your endocrine system involves the glands within your body and the hormones they produce. This includes the pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, testes and pancreas. A disorder or imbalance in the endocrine system can have impacts on your entire body. At Richmond University Medical Center, the skilled physicians in our endocrinology department are specialists in diagnosing, treating, and managing the conditions that affect this complex and vital system within your body. Our specialists are trained and qualified to treat patients of all ages.  Under their care, our patients in Staten Island and nearby communities can find relief and improve their quality of life.

Conditions We Treat

Richmond University Medical Center’s endocrinology department treats a wide range of disorders. We can help if you or a loved one are suffering from any of the following:

  • Diabetes: We treat Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by encouraging lifestyle changes and providing appropriate mediations and treatments.
  • Thyroid disease and disorders: These include hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and thyroid nodules.
  • Obesity: For patients struggling with obesity, we can help with weight loss.
  • Calcium abnormalities: These include osteoporosis, hypercalcemia, and other anomalies.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome: Also known as PCOS, this disorder is caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones and results in infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods.
  • Additional gland disorders: These include diseases and abnormalities in the pituitary, parathyroid, adrenal, and reproductive glands.

Services Provided

Depending on your needs, our physicians can meet with you in a variety of ways. Office visits are available for patients who prefer to meet in person or require a physical examination. If you have a busy schedule or trouble with transportation, a telemedicine appointment may be an option if in-person attention is deemed unnecessary. We also offer the following special services:

  • Onsite thyroid ultrasonography
  • Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of the thyroid
  • Inpatient endocrinology consultations

Philip E. Otterbeck, M.D.

Dr. Otterbeck is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Chief of our Endocrinology Department. He is board-certified in internal medicine, diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism, and has the following qualifications:

    • B.A. in Biology from New York University
    • M.D. at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine
    • Residency in Internal Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center
    • Fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Miroslawa Kudej, M.D.

Dr. Kudej is board-certified in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. She also has the following qualifications:

    • M.D. from Medical Academy in Poznan, Poland
    • Residency in Internal Medicine at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY
    • Fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Interfaith Medical Center

Ishita Kharode, M.D.

Dr. Kharode is  board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology. She has the following qualifications:

Yin Nwe Tun, MD

Dr. Tun’s journey in medicine began with her Medical degree from the Institute of Medicine 1, Yangon, Myanmar. She completed a Master’s in Clinical Tropical Medicine at Mahidol University, and subsequently her second Master’s degree in Diabetes Care and Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. She held positions as Senior House Officer in the NHS hospitals in the UK. While working in the UK, she attained MRCP from the Royal College of Physicians. During her internal medicine residency at Richmond University Medical Center, she served as a third-year Chief Resident. She pursued her fellowship training in endocrinology at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. She held a position as an Attending Faculty in the Endocrinology Fellowship program in South Brooklyn Health before she joins back to the RUMC. Dr Tun is recently elected as FRCP by the Royal College of Physicians, UK. She is board certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and Internal Medicine.

Mark Sheynshteyn, DO

Dr. Sheynshteyn is an endocrinologist at Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC), board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology. He graduated from Hunter College cum laude with bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and art history.

After taking time to travel and search for the best way to continue his education, he discovered the osteopathic approach to medicine. In this approach, the body is treated as a whole and treatment is based upon understanding the relationship between structure, function, and the body’s ability to self-regulate and heal.

He enrolled in the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine to pursue a career in medicine and further explore this philosophy. After graduating medical school, he completed his residency training in the New York Presbyterian Hospital system. He stayed on, as faculty, in the New York Presbyterian system, working in acute inpatient settings. He then pursued further training in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism, completing his fellowship.

Dr. Sheynshteyn is passionate about his work. He believes in an integrative approach to medicine, in the ability to listen and provide appropriate treatment, and in supporting and providing education to his patients.

Alla Adler, NP, APRN, CDCES

Alla Adler is a dedicated and compassionate Adult Endocrinology Nurse Practitioner with over six years of experience in providing high-quality care to patients with a variety of endocrine disorders, including diabetes, thyroid conditions, osteoporosis, and metabolic diseases. With a master’s degree in nursing and board certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) from American Association of Nurse Practitioner specializes in managing chronic conditions, conducting thorough patient assessments, and creating personalized treatment plans to improve patients’ quality of life.

In addition to clinical expertise, Mrs. Adler is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) awarded to few health professionals who have extensive knowledge and experience in diabetes care, prevention, and management. They bring a deep understanding of diabetes management, including lifestyle counseling, medication adjustments, and patient education. Mrs. Adler collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care, collaborating with endocrinologists and other healthcare professionals to provide holistic treatment approaches.

Mrs. Adler is passionate about patient education and empowering individuals to take an active role in their health. Their commitment to evidence-based practices and continuous professional development ensures that patients receive the latest advancements in care.
