Cardiovascular Services in Staten Island, NY

The heart is one of the body’s most essential organs. When something goes wrong, patients want the assurance that their heart care is in experienced hands. Richmond University Medical Center has a reputation for excellence in its cardiovascular services. Its cardiology physicians offer comprehensive emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services at a state-of-the-art facility in Staten Island, New York. Learn why patients trust our expertise for all their heart and vascular care.

Emergency Cardiovascular Care

Every minute counts in a cardiac emergency. The moment something occurs, patients should know where they can go to receive prompt treatment. Richmond University Medical Center is a Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center equipped to handle any crisis, including:

  • Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Shock
  • Heart failure
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Stroke

We have earned the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines Gold award for our expertise and treatment of coronary artery disease and ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), known to be more severe and dangerous than other types of heart attacks. For three consecutive years, we have also been named a “High Performing Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report for our care of patients experiencing congestive heart failure.

Our hospital is also designated as an Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center from both the American Stroke Association and The Joint Commission for our expertise and high-quality care performing thrombectomies for patients who have suffered a stroke. A thrombectomy is a minimally invasive procedure where a hair-thin catheter is inserted into a stroke victim to remove a blood clot from a vein or artery, restoring normal blood flow.

We have also earned the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award, and their Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award for our care of stroke patients who also have Type 2 diabetes. Patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes may be at higher risk for complications after suffering a stroke.

Inpatient Cardiac Services

In addition to emergency treatment, Richmond University Medical Center also offers a full range of inpatient cardiovascular services. Patients receive every level of care, from diagnosis to treatment and recovery care, from compassionate providers utilizing the latest equipment and techniques. Our inpatient cardiology services include:

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

The modern Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory provides comprehensive diagnostics for a full range of heart and artery issues, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, and more. When necessary to save lives, the Cardiac Cath Lab is also equipped to perform interventional procedures, including stenting or ablation.

Electrophysiology

Arrhythmias, or heartbeat irregularities, sometimes indicate a serious underlying condition. Our electrophysiology laboratory uses advanced technology to determine the cause of arrhythmias and syncope (fainting). It also provides sophisticated treatments, including radiofrequency ablation, pacemaker implantation, and defibrillator implantation.

Inpatient Monitoring

Our Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and 40-bed Telemetry Monitoring Unit are staffed by knowledgeable nurses with specialized training to recognize cardiac emergencies. They provide close monitoring and focused care for patients whose heart conditions require a hospital stay. We strive to maintain a comfortable and compassionate environment.

Outpatient Cardiology Services

Not every heart condition requires a hospital stay. Because heart health is long-term and often cumulative, ongoing care is important even for patients who can stay at home. Richmond University Medical Center offers an array of outpatient cardiology services through its Richmond Health Network. Patients can schedule routine check-ups and therapeutic services in a conveniently accessible setting and can transition seamlessly to inpatient care, if necessary.

Noninvasive Testing

Our outpatient services also include noninvasive testing to diagnose and monitor health conditions. These tests include:

Electrocardiography (EKG)

Electrocardiograms (EKGs) record the electric signals from the heart to identify abnormalities. They are useful for diagnosing arrhythmias, heart attacks, or heart failure. Tilt table testing is also available to diagnose syncope disorders.

Echocardiograms

An echocardiogram is a type of ultrasound used to produce two- or three-dimensional images of the heart. These images can be examined by a physician to locate conditions that affect the heart, such as inflammation, valve disorders, or congenital malformations.

Vascular Ultrasounds

Similar to echocardiograms, vascular ultrasounds use sound waves to produce images of major blood vessels. This technique is used to identify and locate blood clots, blockages, or other sources of congestion that affect blood flow.

Cardiac Stress Tests

Hearts often behave differently under stress than they do at rest. Cardiac stress tests use treadmill exercise or pharmacological stimulators to measure the heart’s response to stress. They may be used to diagnose arrhythmias or blockages.

Holter Monitors and Telemetry

In some cases, a brief test provides insufficient information for a diagnosis. Holter monitors and other telemetry devices allow physicians to track heart activity over multiple days, giving them a better understanding of its long-term function.

ABI/PVR Tests

Ankle-brachial index (ABI) and pulse volume recording (PVR) tests are noninvasive diagnostic techniques for measuring blood pressure. They are especially useful for detecting blockages and anomalies that are in the arms or legs.
