Richmond University Medical Center Earns American Association of Blood Banks Accreditation

Earns Accreditation for Donor Center and Transfusion Activities

STATEN ISLAND, NY ; Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) President and CEO Daniel J. Messina, Ph.D., LNHA, FACHE today announced that the hospital has been awarded an accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) - an international organization that sets the highest standards for blood banks and transfusion services. The hospital's successful accreditation follows an intensive on-site assessment by a specially trained AABB assessor who evaluates all aspects of the program to be sure it meets the rigorous requirements set by the association.

"The AABB Accreditation is voluntary," explained Dr. Messina. "Richmond University Medical Center sought accreditation as this program assists facilities around the country in achieving excellence by promoting a level of professional and medical expertise that contributes to quality performance. This is yet another opportunity for us to continually improve our services."

AABB’s Accreditation Program contributes to the quality and safety of collecting, processing, testing, distributing and administering blood and cellular therapy products. The Accreditation Program assesses the quality and operational systems in place within a facility. The basis for assessment is compliance with AABB standards, Code of Federal Regulations and other federal guidance documents.

"Last year, over 4,500 units of blood were transfused at Richmond University Medical Center," said Dr. Messina. “We encourage blood donors to give to the blood bank, because those donations come right back to RUMC, for those in need. We’re grateful to our faithful blood donors and encourage others to give generously. We really need people to give the gift of life by donating blood."
