Richmond University Medical Center Physician Honored for Commitment to Patient Safety

May 8, 2019 – On May 6, the United Hospital Fund (UHF) honored quality improvement leaders from 51 hospitals and long-term care facilities across the metropolitan region at its new annual event, Tribute to Excellence in Health Care. Among this year’s recipients was Dr. Jessie Saverimuttu, Richmond University Medical Center’s infectious diseases attending and chief of quality improvement. Dr. Saverimuttu was acknowledged for her commitment to improving patient safety and the quality of care provided throughout the hospital.

Dr. Saverimuttu received the Excellence in Health Care Award at a luncheon held at Cipriani 42nd Street in Manhattan. As chief of quality improvement at Richmond University Medical Center, she supervises the medical staff in developing, implementing, and maintaining programs and policies that ensure the highest levels of quality care for all patients.

Richmond University Medical Center continues to be recognized for its quality of care by national accrediting organizations such as the Joint Commission, which recently awarded the hospital the Gold Seal of Approval in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and recertified its perinatal care services.  The hospital was also given three year accreditation with 5 commendations from the American Colleague of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. This latest accreditation marks 81 consecutive years of accreditation for the hospital’s cancer care programs.

“The Tribute is both a celebration of personal leadership and an occasion to amplify and elevate the vital work underway to make our health care system more patient-centered, safe, and effective,” said UHF president Dr. Anthony Shih.

Dr. Saverimuttu was joined by her husband, Raj, and Dr. Mitchell Fogel, Richmond University Medical Center’s senior vice president and chief of medicine. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving to be honored with this award then Dr. Saverimuttu,” Dr. Fogel said. “Thanks to her efforts and aggressive determination to ensure the highest standard of care is being provided to our patients at all times, our hospital is being recognized nationally as a leader in patient safety.”
