Richmond University Medical Center Opens New Histology Lab

Richmond University Medical Center has officially unveiled its new comprehensive histology lab. Located on the main campus at 355 Bard Avenue in West Brighton, the new lab features state-of-the-art equipment that enables the medical center to now process its own biopsy specimens from departments within the hospital including surgery, endoscopy, obstetrics/gynecology, and radiology.

To help officially open the new lab, hospital staff and administration were joined by Loretta Cauldwell from Staten Island Community Board #1 and Kevin Elkins, district director for Rep. Max Rose. The lab expected to take several months to reach completion was actually finished and fully equipped in less than three months.

“The capabilities of the new lab will enable faster diagnoses, greater quality control, and increase direct interaction between physicians, pathologists and lab technicians,” Rosemarie Stazzone, chief operating officer and chief nurse officer said. “This lab is the latest achievement for Richmond University Medical Center as we continue to utilize the latest technology available to provide the highest level of quality care to our patients and their families.”

The new lab features innovative new equipment including cassette printers, embedding stations, tissue processors, crystostat, and auto-stainers. Shortly after the ribbon cutting ceremony concluded, the lab began processing the first of many tissue samples from patients undergoing treatment within the hospital.

“I’m very excited about what we will be able to accomplish here,” Dr. Svetoslav Bardarov, chief of laboratory medicine said. The new lab and its team of technicians and pathologists will be under Dr. Bardarov’s direction. Prior to joining Richmond University Medical Center’s medical staff in December 2018, Dr. Bardarov worked at South Nassau Communities Hospital on Long Island for eight years, serving as the hospital’s chief of surgical pathology.
