Richmond University Medical Center Hosts Healthcare Professionals from the UK

July 26, 2019- The Center for Integrative Behavioral Medicine at Richmond University Medical Center hosted the Staten Island Performing Provider System (SI PPS) and health care professionals from England recently to exchange best practices and develop collaborations with organizations that share common objectives. The Center for Integrative Behavioral Medicine, located at 1130 South Avenue, was chosen as a site to visit because of its reputation for providing advanced, effective programs for children, adolescents and adults struggling with behavioral health issues. The group from England will be visiting similar sites across the country over the next few weeks.

Among the visitors from “across the pond” was Dr. Robert Stewart, clinical designer for the Design and Learning Centre for Clinical and Social Innovation, United Kingdom; and Anne Tidmarshm, director of Partnerships-Adult Social and Health for the Kent County Council, SRO Workforce, Kent and Medway STP. A major part of the visit focused on the extraordinary successes resulting from Richmond University Medical Center’s integration of primary care into the treatment of patients also receiving assistance for mental health and substance abuse issues. Studies by both the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors and the World Health Organization show an alarming existence of medical illnesses among patients that also have serious mental illnesses which can reduce life expectancy by as much as 25 years.

Located in Sandwich, England, the Design and Learning Centre for Clinical & Social Innovation was officially launched in 2016. The centre provides a variety of behavioral health programs to assist the public and maintains international partnerships in Japan, Singapore and Sweden.

“We hope through this exchange of ideas, our friends from England can duplicate the successes we have accomplished here which have helped so many people,” medical director of outpatient services and interim chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Dr. Joel Idowu said.
