STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — At 108 years old, the Girls Scouts of America are still going strong!
And once again the organization, that promotes service to community and traditionally sells cookies to raise funds to support Girl Scout councils and individual troops, has come through for Staten Island.
This week members of Staten Island Girl Scout Troop 5527 delivered a “sweet surprise” -- their famed Girl Scout cookies — to medical staffers at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.
The donation of more than 200 boxes were distributed to the staff at RUMC, made possible by contributions from individuals in the community as well as the Richmond University Medical Center Auxiliary.
“This is the sweetest donation we have received,” Rosemarie Stazzone, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer, said. “These girls spend so much time learning about the world through Girl Scouts and for them to take the time to donate these cookies to us will bring a smile to so many faces among our heroes here at RUMC. Thank you the entire troop, their families, and to everyone who participated including our own RUMC Auxiliary members.”
Because of restrictions, this year Girl Scout Troop 5527 used social media to promote the sale of the cookies, since they have been unable to meet.
More than 15 individuals and the RUMC Auxiliary contributed to the cause, making the donation possible.
The donation included all varieties of the cookies, including the most popular: Thin Mints and Samoas. To add a personal touch, each box came replete with a handcrafted card from the girls in the troop addressed to medical staffers, thanking them for saving others and letting them know that the girls consider all of them heroes and role models.
