Mother of 3 beats coronavirus after 50 days; home for Mother’s Day

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Eva Meyer, the mother of three children, was more than ecstatic when she found out she would spend Mother’s Day at home with her kids after 50 days in the hospital fighting coronavirus (COVID-19).

Meyer was released from Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC), West Brighton on Friday amid a long line of RUMC staff, who cheered as she was taken out of the hospital via a gurney.

Meyer -- who was among the first COVID-19 positive patients to be admitted to the hospital in March -- went home after spending more than 50 days undergoing treatment for the virus, according to RUMC.

Meyer is the 401st COVID-19 patient to be discharged from RUMC since late March.

“Anytime we have a patent discharged it is the highlight of our day and a real boost for our team,” said Dan Messina, RUMC president and chief executive officer. “This was extra special for us given how long Ms. Meyer was in our care and that we were able to send her home to her family right before Mother’s Day. It was a true blessing.”

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, there have been 12,452 confirmed coronavirus cases in the borough since the pandemic’s outbreak, according to the data, the most recent available.

There had been 12,380 cases at the same time on Wednesday.

Staten Island’s fatality total was 841 as of Thursday evening, up from 828.

The deaths include 681 Islanders with confirmed coronavirus cases, a rise of 12 from Wednesday. One more case was added to the “probable” category, raising that tally to 160.
