Latest Staten Island coronavirus numbers: A grim milestone, but glimmer of hope

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The number of deaths on Staten Island due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) has topped 100.

By Thursday morning, 105 borough residents had succumbed to the disease, as Staten Island again reached its high mark of 14 fatalities over a 24-hour period, according to the borough’s two hospital systems.

Of the deaths, 77 have occurred in Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), with 28 in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.

But, there also was good news.

An additional 84 coronavirus patients have been discharged from borough hospitals – 62 from SIUH and 22 from Richmond University - spokesmen said.

Thus far, 379 patients have been treated and released – 319 from SIUH and 60 from Richmond University.

In addition, SIUH reported a decline of coronavirus patients being treated.

As of Thursday morning, 308 patients were receiving treatment – 241 in the Ocean Breeze campus and 67 in the Prince’s Bay facility, said Christian Preston, a spokesman.

That number represented a drop of 60 patients from Wednesday’s total of 368.

Richmond University now has 103 coronavirus patients, an increase of 13 from Wednesday, Alex Lutz, a spokesman, said. Twenty-five of the patients are in the Intensive Care Unit.

The total number of patients being treated for the virus in borough hospitals was 411, a dip of 47 from Wednesday morning’s total of 458, based on the hospitals’ data.

Overall, there were 2,723 coronavirus cases on Staten Island as of 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the city Health Department said.

That figure marked an increase of 243 cases from Wednesday morning’s total.

Citywide, there were 48,462 cases as of Thursday morning, a jump of 3,547 from the same time Wednesday.

Men continue to account for 55% of the overall cases, women for 45%, said the data.

Fatalities in the five boroughs rose to 1,397 by Thursday morning, a spike of 258 from Wednesday morning.

Of the 1,064 deaths investigated by the Health Department, 1,046, or 98.3% of those patients had underlying illness.

Conditions include diabetes, lung disease, cancer, immunodeficiency, heart disease, hypertension, asthma, kidney disease and gastro-intestinal/liver disease, said the Health Department.

The infection rate per capita continues its climb throughout the city.

Testing, which officials stress does not necessarily reflect the full spread of the virus, now shows 572 of every 100,000 Staten Islanders have tested positive, according to 2018 Census data projections and the Health Department’s Thursday morning data.

Staten Island accounts for 6% of the city’s total coronavirus cases.

Queens continues to display the highest rate of confirmed coronavirus cases in the city, with 717 residents per 100,000 testing positive. That borough has 16,336 cases, accounting for 34% of the city’s total.

The Bronx’s infection rate of 636 residents per 100,000 remains the second highest in the city.

There are 9,107 cases in the Bronx.

Manhattan retains the lowest infection rate among the boroughs, with 447 per 100,000 residents testing positive.

There have been 7,278 positive cases in Manhattan, which accounts for 15% of the city’s total cases, according to the city’s Health Department.

Brooklyn, the heaviest-populated borough, has the fourth-lowest rate of infection per 100,000 residents - 503.

Brooklyn’s total of 12,983 cases is the second highest among the five boroughs.

Brooklyn accounts for 27% of the city’s reported coronavirus cases, Health Department statistics show.
