STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Twelve people have died at hospitals on Staten Island after testing positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) -- a startling figure that doubles the number of fatalities reported here just a little more than 24 hours ago.
The number of deaths stood at six Saturday night.
There are currently a total of 101 in-patients being treated at borough hospitals in coronavirus cases.
Staten Island University Hospital is treating 52 patients for COVID-19 at the Ocean Breeze campus and 23 people with that illness at its location in Prince’s Bay. The hospital has had a total of nine deaths related to the virus, according to a spokesman.

Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton is reporting three deaths related to COVID-19.
Specimens collected at RUMC and sent to the Public Health Lab run by city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene resulted in 42 confirmed positives, the spokesman said.
The hospital in West Brighton is caring for 26 people who have been admitted, with four patients being treated in the Intensive Care Unit due to the coronavirus, according to a hospital spokesman.
“We have had 3 patients pass away and we extend our deepest sympathies to their families,” the RUMC hospital spokesman said. “The hospital will not provide additional information out of respect and privacy for our patients and their families.”
CITY FIGURES
According to city data posted 9:35 a.m. on Monday, there are 817 COVID-19 cases on Staten Island, and a total of 12,339 in the city.
While Staten Island’s 817 figure accounts for 7% of coronavirus cases in the city, the borough’s rate of positive tests per 100,000 residents has jumped to tops in the city at 174.3, based off of 2010 Census data.
The boroughs with the next highest rate of positive tests per 100,000 residents are Queens (162.3) and Manhattan (162.1).
The borough’s rate, however, could be indicative of the accessibility of testing here due to the state’s first drive-through site located in Ocean Breeze.
