Coronavirus: 82 new cases on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island added more than 80 new positive cases for coronavirus (COVID-19), according to data from the New York City Health Department.

As of Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. Staten Island holds 1,166 positive cases, 82 more than the morning data published by the department.

Based on the positive cases, 244.8 of every 100,000 Staten Islanders have tested positive for the virus, according to 2018 Census data projections and Wednesday morning data from the city’s Health Department.

After being the borough with the highest rate of positive cases in New York City, Staten Island now ranks fourth overall.

The borough has had 21 fatalities overall.

As of Wednesday night, Queens has the highest rate, with 281.7 of every 100,000 residents confirmed, with a total of 6,420 cases -- about 32% of the city’s cases, the highest so far.

The Bronx is the borough with the second-highest rate of confirmed cases, with 247 out of every 100,000 residents testing positive and an overall count of 3,542 cases.

Manhattan ranks third so far, with 222 positive cases out of every 100,000 residents and 3,616 cases in total.

Brooklyn is the borough with the lowest rate of positive cases in NYC, with 202.5 for every 100,000 residents and 5,232 cases.

CASES AT STATEN ISLAND HOSPITALS

There are 150 positive coronavirus patients currently hospitalized on Staten Island, the Advance/SILive.com previously reported.

Staten Island University Hospital’s system (SIUH) has seen 17 deaths, and four have died at Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC), according to hospital spokesmen.

Christian Preston, an SIUH spokesman, said 83 individuals are currently hospitalized at the system’s campus in Ocean Breeze, and an additional 32 are hospitalized in the Prince’s Bay location.

Alex Lutz, a spokesman for RUMC, said 35 individuals are hospitalized at the West Brighton hospital, including eight in intensive care. “We have had four patients pass away and we extend our deepest sympathies to their families,” he said.
