Perinatal Joint Comission Care Certification

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Richmond University Medical Center, an affiliate of the Mount Sinai Health Network, today announced that it has received the prestigious Joint Commission Perinatal Care Certification; becoming one of only two hospitals in New York City, and the first on Staten Island, to receive the recognition of its outstanding care in the period immediately before and after birth.

The Joint Commission’s certification program covers prenatal through postpartum care in order to improve and maintain the health of newborns and their mothers. The awarding of this certification follows a thorough evaluation, in the month of May, of the hospital’s perinatal care program. In its’ evaluation and granting of the certification, The Joint Commission noted that the medical center did not have any identifiable “opportunities for improvement.

“We are grateful that The Joint Commission recognized our commitment to achieving exceptional quality in integrated, coordinated and patient-centered care for mothers and their newborns,” stated Daniel J. Messina, Ph.D., FACHE, LNHA, President & Chief Executive Officer of Richmond University Medical Center. “I am grateful to our perinatal team for the heroic work they perform every day and for these tremendous results throughout a rigorous examination process.”

“Achieving Perinatal Care Certification recognizes an organization’s commitment to healthy mothers and healthy babies,” said Wendi Roberts, RN, BA, MS, CLNC, executive director, Certification Programs, The Joint Commission. “The certification gives providers an unparalleled advantage when it comes to preparing mothers for labor and delivery, while also being able to help them if complications arise.”

An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

Earlier this year, Richmond University Medical Center was awarded the prestigious international recognition from Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility; the only hospital on Staten Island to be so designated and the 6th hospital in NYC/Metro area and the 12th hospital in New York State to receive the designation. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (“BFHI”), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
