Meningiomas

The medical professionals at Richmond University Medical Center specialize in treating meningiomas, a type of tumor. Unlike other brain tumors that originate from brain tissue, meningiomas arise from meninges, which are the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord. Patients in the NYC area can seek advanced meningioma treatment and care at the Richmond Brain and Spine Center at 355 Bard Avenue in Staten Island, NY.

Types Of Meningiomas

While most meningioma tumors are slow growing, they can still cause complications. As the tumor starts to develop inward, it puts pressure on the brain and may impair functioning. The tumor can also grow outward, resulting in an external bulge. Meningiomas tend to occur at the top of the brain, the outer curve and at the base of the skull.

The majority of patients with a meningioma have a benign tumor (noncancerous). These are typically filled with cysts, mineral deposits or a tightly packed bunch of blood vessels. However, some patients are diagnosed with anaplastic meningioma, which is a very rare tumor displaying cancer-like properties. While symptoms vary depending on the type, severity and location of the tumor, some patients experience headaches and weakness in one arm or leg.

Treatment Options

At Richmond University Medical Center, treatment regimens are always developed based on the individual patient’s unique needs. Even so, the primary form of treatment is surgery and the secondary form is radiation therapy. No matter which treatment plan is selected for you or your loved one, rest assured that the experienced team of neurosurgeons at RUMC will provide excellent, personalized care.

Since Richmond makes it a priority to stay at the forefront of neurological innovations, there may be cutting-edge techniques and treatment plans available to remove the tumor, including minimally invasive surgical procedures.
