STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Island Auto Group and Toyota Motor Sales each presented Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) with a check for $10,000 to help fund the new state-of-the-art emergency room, during a ceremony Tuesday morning.
Although a national company, Toyota Motor Sales looks to help local charities by matching donations the local Toyota dealerships make in their communities -- so the company matched Island Auto Group's $10,000 donation to RUMC.
"We're so thankful to Toyota for their support," said Marcello Sciarrino, one of three partners at Island Auto Group.
"We all live and work in this community, and it's great to know that when we need it we can get a high level of care here on Staten Island. We're happy to give our support to the new Emergency Department, where I know the level of care will continue to get better," Sciarrino said.
Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at RUMC, Dr. Mansoor Khan said that the new Emergency Department will better fit the growing need of Staten Island, noting that the current Emergency Department cannot properly accommodate the growing number of patients.
"This is a great show of support for a very special project," said Daniel Messina, president and CEO of RUMC.
"The support from local businesses and the community is essential for projects like this," he said.
The expanded 39,000-square-foot Emergency Department will have the ability to accommodate RUMC's increasing patient volume with 50 new treatment rooms, a trauma bay, improved throughput, designated and outfitted patient observation and geriatric units, additional isolation capacity and a pediatric department.
RUMC expects to break ground on the project in mid-2016.
